All You Need Is
Love

What do you get when you mix 100 gay men, a five piece
band and dancers who are described as bold and magnetic?
Why that is an easy one! Obviously you are coming up with
the musical event of the summer put on by the Atlanta Gay
Men’s Chorus. The group is performing “All You Need Is
Love, The Music of The Beatles” with a little help from a
live band and the always amazing Staibdance group, this is
sure to be a night not to miss, especially if you are a
Beatles fanatic. The performance will take place at the
Georgia State University Rialto Theater on Friday June 9th
at 8 pm and Saturday June 10th with two shows to choose
from either a 3 pm or 8 pm, it gives most of us a good
enough reason to go past North Avenue.
Marking the 50th (well kind of) anniversary of the
Beatles, the AGMC is “performing twenty-eight great tunes
by The Beatles with a five-piece band remaining true to
The Beatles original scores. We’re also excited to partner
with the women of Staibdance who bring energized movement
to music that really commands it. Additionally, there are
soundbytes from the 1960’s, including radio and television
broadcasts, as well as a nod to Rowan and Martins’
Laugh-In in an ensemble performance of the song “When I’m
Sixty-Four.”
Robinson goes onto express their need to salute the all
male vocal group, stating “The Beatles had a simple yet
powerful message of civil rights, love peace and
understanding; tolerance in an intolerant world. The
messages are needed just as much today as in the
tumultuous ‘60s.”
Like most of us always wanting to preserve the glory days,
the AGMC will be performing work from original Beatle
scores, so they can stay true to the original meanings and
sounds of this iconic group. “In My Life and a few other
tunes, such as We Can Work It Out and Imagine, have been
arranged specifically to bring the power of their messages
into this century. Our goal has been to create a work that
honors and celebrates the 60’s, but also emphasizes that
we have more work to do as a community with regard to
civil rights and equality,” Robison continued. “It’s a fun
romp through some great music, but it’s also relevant, and
I think very powerful.”
The Staibdance Group, led by George Staib who is the head
of the Dance Department at Emory, will be accompanying the
chorus. Complete with 60’s style costumes and several of
the most memorable quotes from the era. This performance
will not only be amazing but memorable. The group has been
described as having “strong command of the diverse
movement vocabulary and a gift for large cast of dances”.
Rialto Theater is located at 80 Forsyth Street NW.
Ticket prices are $40, $30, and $20 for evening
performances (depending on what section in case you were
wondering) and $35, $25, and $15 for the Saturday matinee.
